Media Responsibility: A Conservative Look at the Jussie Smollett Case

Once again the mainstream media have shown their complete lack of interest in reporting the truth when it comes to any ounce of hope that the story is against Trump supporters. By now, I am sure we have all heard the story of singer and “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett getting attacked by supposed racist and homophobic Trump supporters on January 29, 2019 in Chicago. This incredibly too good to be true story, one that gave Trump haters the perfect opportunity to blame Trump for his supporters being racist and homophobic, turned out to be just that: Too good to be true. This is just like the recent incident with the Covington Catholic High School boys, where the media look to portray all Trump supporters as horrible people even when they are not in the wrong. I have elected to break this article down by listing the alleged facts in the initial Smollett story, providing initial commentary from Democratic pundits, and explaining the new information about the story.

The Initial Story

When: January 29, 2019 at 2:00 AM

Where: 300 block of East Lower North Water St. in Downtown Chicago

Victim: Jussie Smollett

Perpetrators: Two masked, white men

Description of Attack: As told by Smollett, “The assailants…hurled homophobic and racial slurs at him, put a rope around his neck and poured a chemical substance on him (New York Times).” Smollett also informed authorities that the two masked men were also yelling “MAGA country.”

Additional Information: There was also a racist letter sent to the set of “Empire” targeting Smollett that read “You will die black fag.”

The Initial Responses

In response to the attack on Smollett, Nancy Pelosi’s since-deleted tweet read, “The racist, homophobic attack on @JussieSmollett is an affront to our humanity. No one should be attacked for who they are or whom they love. I pray that Jussie has a speedy recovery & that justice is served. May we all commit to ending this hate once & for all (Daily Caller).”

Cory Booker tweeted, “The vicious attack on actor Jussie Smollett was an attempted modern-day lynching. I’m glad he’s safe. To those in congress who don’t feel the urgency to pass our Anti-lynching bill designating lynching as a federal hate crime – I urge you to pay attention (Daily Wire).”

Kamala Harris tweeted, “.‪@JussieSmollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know. I’m praying for his quick recovery. This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate (Daily Wire).”

New Information Revealed

We have certainly learned a lot about what happened on the night of Jussie Smollett’s altercation. Aside from several items that won’t change about the case (date, location, etc.), more information has come out to suggest that Smollett and his friends concocted a fake attack. Two brothers of Nigerian descent, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo, “have told investigators they were paid to take part in a hoax (New York Times).” Additonally, the brothers “…told investigators Smollett directed them to buy the rope used in the incident, and paid for the purchase at Crafty Beaver Hardware Store in Ravenswood days before the incident (Chicago (CBS)).” We have also learned that, according to the brothers, they were the ones who created and sent the racist letter to Smollett as well (Chicago (CBS)).”

New Responses Following New Information

When asked about the recent, new information, Cory Booker said, “The information is still coming out. I’m going to withhold until all the information actually comes out from on the record sources (Daily Wire).” That is pretty interesting, Mr. Booker, considering when the story broke you took virtually no time in calling this a “modern-day lynching.” How come all of a sudden you want to wait and see what happens?

Kamala Harris was also asked to follow-up and…just bear with me here. Her response was,

“OK, so, I will say this about that case,” she said. “I think that the facts are still unfolding, and, um, I’m very, um, concerned about obviously, the initial, um, allegation that he made about what might have happened. And it’s something we should all take seriously whenever anyone, um, alleges that kind of behavior, but there should be an investigation,” Harris added. “And I think that once the investigation has concluded then we can all comment, but I’m not going to comment until I know the outcome of the investigation (Fox News).”

Again, so quick to comment on the initial reports of the incident, but now so calm and hesitant to say anything about it now that new information comes up that might exonerate the “racist” and “homophobic” Trump supporters. At least Nancy Pelosi and her staff deleted her initial tweet. Lord forbid she tweet something about how she jumped to a conclusion though.

This case was sketchy since the very beginning and I hope it comes to an end soon. It really is not looking good for Jussie Smollett right now, but we will see what happens when it is all said and done. If it turns out that Smollett is indeed lying and he did stage the attack, it is just another example of the mainstream media jumping to conclusions in order for them to show Trump supporters in as horrible of a light as possible.
