The Wrestle Report Card: NXT TakeOver: New York

TakeOverWWE NXT TakeOver: New York took place live on The WWE Network on Friday April 5th. Here’s a report card for the show.

Match 1: NXT Tag Team Champions The War Raiders vs. Aleistar Black and Ricochet

Winners: The War Raiders

Grade: 4 Stars (A). Even though the result was pretty predictable with Black & Ricochet competing more on RAW and Smackdown Live lately. The athleticism of all four men is incredible.

Match 2: NXT North American Champion The Velveteen Dream vs. Matt Riddle

Winner: The Velveteen Dream

Grade: 4.25 Stars (A). The first half of this match was a little slow, but Dream and Riddle picked up the pace the last 10 minutes. I loved seeing Dream portray his Hall of Fame idols.

Match 3: WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne vs Walter

Winner: Walter

Grade: 4.5 Stars (A). Wow! What an incredible story these two men told. Walter could be the European Brock Lesnar. He is that dominant. Dunne’s legendary title comes to an end, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Walter surpasses that reign. Can’t wait to see a rematch.

Match 4: NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Bazler vs. Kairi Sane vs. Bianca Belair vs. Io Shirai

Winner: Shayna Baszler

Grade: 3.75 Stars (A-). If 3.75 stars is the lowest rating for a wrestling match on a show, it’s a really good show. Even though this match was the “worst” on the show, it was still really good. The only complaint I have is that I feel there should have been a new champion especially as much as the three challengers were showcased tonight.

Match 5: Johnny Gargano vs. Adam Cole in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls Match for the Vacant NXT Championship

Winner: Johnny Gargano

Grade: 5 Stars (A+). Watch this match now. Go to wwenetwork.com and watch it. Words cannot describe how awesome this match was. It’s a truly storybook ending for Gargano. However, it really is just the beginning. Gargano is now the hunted, and everyone will be wanting a title shot including former Champion Tomasso Ciampa who never lost his championship in the ring.

Final Show Grade: 4.3 Stars (A). One of the best shows of all time. This should have been WrestleMania.
