The Ohio State Buckeyes football team kicked off week 2 of the college football season against the Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati. After a good return of the kickoff from the Bearcats to start the game by Demario McCall, the Buckeyes first drive stalls right past midfield as the Bearcats defense stands up to the Ohio State offense. But an awesome punt by Blake Haubeil of the Buckeyes pins Cincinnati back at their own 1 yard line and after a quick three and out the Bearcats are forced to punt. Justin Fields and the Buckeyes offense takes over again and marches right down the field and caps the drive with a touchdown run by the young Mr Fields, his second touchdown rush of the season. After a successful extra point attempt, the Buckeyes go up 7-0.
Cincinnati starts their second drive with a big pass to their tight-end up the seam of the middle of the Buckeyes defense for big first down play. But after a a strong stand capped off by a sack by Chase Young of Ohio State Buckeyes the Bearcats are forced to punt again. The Buckeyes start their third drive right around their own 20 yard line. A couple plays later a big turnover by KJ Hill of Ohio State is negated because of a penalty on the Bearcats defense. Three plays later on fourth and 1 the Buckeyes are stopped and Cincinnati takes over on downs.
Cincinnati offense goes for their own fourth and 1 from the Buckeyes 46 and convert it for a big first down run by quarterback Desmond Ridder to end the first quarter of the game. On third and 4 and a throwaway pass by Ridder because of pressure from Chase young again, a roughing the passer penalty extends the Bearcats drive. The defense of Ohio State plays 3 tough downs with Cincinnati threatening to score with their backs near the goal line. And the drive ends with a blocked field goal attempt by guess who Chase Young again. Buckeyes 7-0.
Buckeyes offense takes over again and after 2 quick plays, a big pass to Binjimen Victor and a nice run by JK Dobbins to the Bearcats 43.
There’s an injury timeout for Kyriq McDonald the backup safety of the Bearcats as both teams kneel and pray on the field as the gurney comes out to get him. Though he was able to sit up and wave to the crowd as he’s carted off.
2 passes one to Victor and one to Olave and the Buckeyes are right back knocking on the door of another score. Touchdown run JK Dobbins. 6 plays 87 yards and the Buckeyes are up 14-0 on the Cincinnati Bearcats.
Shawn Wade knocks the ball loose on first down but Cincinnati recovers at their own 29 yard line. On third down an incomplete pass and another quick 3 and out for the Bearcats. A punt to Kj Hill returned to the Ohio State 39. Fields has all day to pass on first down but good coverage by the Bearcats defense combined with him holding on to the ball too long results in a coverage sack. Ohio State time-out.
A penalty on the Cincinnati defense makes it second and 9. And a handoff to JK Dobbins a big run of 60 yards and another touchdown by the Buckeyes offense. 21-0 all Buckeyes so far. 136 rushing yards already early in this game for the Buckeyes.
After a kickoff and big run from Bearcats quarterback Ridder in which he was injured, Cincinnati has to put in their backup quarterback. A quick 3 plays later and Bearcats punt again. Quick run by Dobbins on first down and a pass to KJ Hill by fields, with another penalty by the Bearcats has the Buckeyes near midfield again. First run by Dobbins the a big pass to Olave to the Bearcats 11 yard line has Ohio State in scoring position again. A 5 yard run on first down by fields then a second down blitz and sack by the Bearcats defense. A third down pass for a 9 yard touchdown by Justin Fields to Garret Wilson a young Buckeye wide receiver. 28-0 Buckeyes.
A couple of passes by Desmond Ridder who just returned to the game after that injury has Cincinnati marching up the field trying to get something on the scoreboard before halftime. But after making it to their own 44 yard line a few incomplete passes and Cincinnati punts again.
With 1:07 left in the half 3 runs by Dobbins takes the game to halftime. Ohio State up 28-0 at the half.
Justin Fields is 14/16 for 186 passing yards and a touchdown and 7 rushes for 29 yards and another score. Jk Dobbins has 17 rush attempts for 141 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The story of the first half in my opinion has been Chase Young and the Ohio State defense. They have held the Bearcats offense to only 108 total yards and 18 of those rushing yards. Chase Young has brought pressure constantly and almost came up with a big interception, that had he kept his eyes on, might have went in for another score.
The Buckeyes offense is clicking with 356 yards, with 170 of those yards coming on the the ground.
The second half starts with a touchback and Cincinnati starts at their own 25. A first down run for 1 yard, second down run for 4 by Michael Warren and it’s third and 5 at the 30 yard line. A third down pass of 20 yards and Cincinnati has a first down at the 50. A 4 yard run, an incomplete pass, then another sack by Chase Young and another punt by the Bearcats.
The Buckeyes have a few positive plays for their first drive of the second half but with some pressure from the Bearcats defense Fields throws the ball away on third down and it’s a punt for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
A great punt from Drue Chrisman of the Buckeyes combined with a penalty pins the Bearcats back. A loss of yards on a run by Ridder and another penalty and it’s third and 8. Another incomplete pass and Cincinnati barely gets a punt away as the Buckeyes takeover at their own 46 yard line.
After a first down pass to a wide open Victor and another first and second down run by Master Teague the Buckeyes face a third and 7. But Fields and the Buckeyes offense convert and after another run for a touchdown by Fields the Buckeyes are up 35-0.
The Bearcats make some great plays and after a 46 yard pass from Ridder to Alec Pierce the Bearcats look to score at the Buckeyes 16 yard line. A couple of runs by Tavion Thomas and the Bearcats are cooking at the Ohio State 4 yard line but another penalty by the Bearcats backs them up to the 9 yard line. On first and goal at the 9 yard line a Desmond Ridder pass is intercepted by Tuf Borland and retuned to the Ohio State 45 yard line.
Justin Fields passes to Austin Mack for 6 yards and then a Master Teague run for gives the Buckeyes a first down at the Cincinnati 40 yard line and that was the last play of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter starts with an incomplete pass from Fields to Mack but yet another penalty on the Bearcats gives the Buckeyes a first down at the Cincy 25. Four straight runs by Teague and 2 first downs later finds the Buckeyes with second down at the Cincinnati 2 yard line. A completed pass behind the line of scrimmage to KJ Hill has the Buckeyes at the Cincinnati 9 yard line. And then an incomplete pass by Fields. A rare sack against Justin Fields is negated because of a holding penalty on the defense and results in a first down Buckeyes at the Bearcats 5 yard line and the Bearcats need a timeout. Out of the timeout a 5 yard pass to Hill for the touchdown and a extra point kick from Haubeil makes it a 42-0 score in the fourth quarter. 3 plays and 0 yards and the Bearcats punt again. 5 plays and 18 yards and the Buckeyes punt it right back. But the clock is down to 7:45 left in the game. 11 plays and a 79 yard march down the field essentially ends the game with a Tavion Thomas fumble that was recovered by the Buckeyes. 3 straight run plays and 2 first downs and the game ends with a kneel down and that’s the ballgame. 42-0 is the final score as the Ohio State Buckeyes roll to a dominant victory over the Bearcats of Cincinnati.
